decorated bamkuchen 2012 3 18 |
"Just wanna have fun" - got a hint from this phrase? A song entitled similarly, popularized by Cyndi Lauper in the 1980's? Certainly. In my case though, I just wanna have fun making something out of an ordinary thing and aspiring for one a bit more appealing to the eyes and the palate without having to spend a lot of money. Why am I saying this? Recently, I have had no time to bake but I would like to eat something nice and sweet. If I went to a cakeshop, a big part from my purse would swiftly fly away so I decided to think of an economical alternative, i.e., recreate something myself. I got an affordable baumkuchen (this cake originated from Germany; the name means "logcake" or "treecake" or layered cake) from the store and decorated it. I had 2 kinds of berries (strawberrries and blueberries), dried apricot and chocolate snacks at home. I had in my fridge some soymilk-fortified cream (soymilk has less calories than whole milk). One of my co-workers gave me a snack-size raspberry sorbet and I made good use of it in this "escapade". What I did was to cut one baumkuchen into 7 pieces. I had two so 14 pieces of small cakes could be produced. Now, let's move on to the decorating part. I melted sugar into the cream by whipping the mixture followed by cooling of the mix in the refrigerator till use. In a separate bowl, I melted a few pieces of gelatin sheets and combined in it the melted raspberry sorbet. Afterwards, I added a small amount of cream. Then, I brushed this mixture around the baumkuchen slices. The slices were cooled to harden the gelatin. Afterwards, halved fresh strawberries were laid on top of the cakes, followed by fresh blueberries, dried apricot, chocolate snacks and heart-shaped white chocolates. The result looked sumptuous dressed-up cakes. The decor has complemented the dainty flavor of baumkuchen.
And now, my most awaited time has come - the eating time! I set my table as if I were in a restaurant. On a nice plate were a piece of cake, muscat grapes and slices of bananas with cream added, plus a cup of lightly brewed coffee. Lovely!
On top of that, I have also cooked sauteed vermicelli noodles, one of our regular dishes at home. After a hard day, this has made my day complete and relaxing. Well, I just wanna have some fun! Thank you, oh God, for Your provisions.
