The cherry and rape blossoms in Miyazaki Prefecture (Japan) at Saito-baru, Saito City 宮崎県、西都市、西都原の桜と菜の花

Vocabulary:  sakura no ki - cherry tree/trees - 桜の木 (さくらのき)

Miyazaki Prefecture is known to be the birthplace of Japan (according to earlier chronicles).  In one place in Miyazaki called Saito City, there is a tourist spot called Saito baru.

About Saito City:  Saito is the 5th largest city in the Miyazaki prefecture. 70% of the city is mountainous, and a river cuts through the city from northwest to southeast. Many other smaller streams cut through the valleys in Saito. Much of the city is covered by mountains and forest (approximately 80%). It is bordered by Kijo Town, Takanabe Town, Shintomi Town in the East and Sadowara Town and Kunitomi Town in the South, and Nango Village and Shiba Village in the north.

  • Saito City Flower Festival
    Date
    : 31 March ~ 8 April
  • Time: 10am - 10pm daily
  • Location: Saitobaru
The Flower Festival is a chance to enjoy Saitobaru's 2000 sakura trees as they flower for the short time at the end of March and beginning of April. Saitobaru is also full of rape blossoms ( The name derives from the Latin for turnip, rāpa or rāpum, and is first recorded in English at the end of the 14th century. Older writers usually distinguished the turnip and rape by the adjectives round and long(-rooted) respectively.)

'Kofun Matsuri'

  • Location: Saitobaru
Saitobaru
Saitobaru kofungun is a collection of 9 clusters of tumuli comprising 311 burial mounds which lay on a plateau roughly 4 by 2 km in size, making it one of the largest collections of burial mounds in Japan. It was designated a Special Historic site by the Japanese government in 1952.

Last March 30, I had "hanami" or originally termed cherry blossom viewing; however, it was also rape blossom or canola blossom viewing as there were lots of very bright yellow rape blossoms side by side with the pinkish white cherry blossoms. This is the most popular variety called "Somei Yoshino". There were many people amidst the strong winds during this day. It was a cold but a truly wonderful day.  I was amazed at the power of God, indeed everything is His breathtaking creation. While writing this article, I became inspired to write the following poem.  I hope you like it.

  (A free-flowing poem)
                                          Cherry tree and its blossoms
                                       (by Big little*angel 2012 April 9)

As the cherry tree braces itself during the long winter,
enduring harsh, cold winds and even snow,
                        come springtime, it faithfully showcases
the most dainty blooms that capture each person's heart.

As I gaze upon each flower,
I feel that it's too marvelous a sight,
                         without distortion of any kind
                         as it has endured wintertime.
                         It stands alluring
at whatever angle my eyes are enjoying.

Of course, its beauty is at its best
                         until the blooms are there;
however, the falling blooms magnetize me,
as each petal dances with the wind.
Like the gracious falling rain that kisses
a parched land and a thirsty vegetation.

                         I pause and remember, behold,
it's like a long lovely train of a bride's white wedding gown,
                         swayed by her delicate movements,
Everybody looks at it even when the bride has walked past
the aisle to meet her groom.

The petals blown by the wind construes a mystery,
one that lasts in my heart so I need not get weary.
Even God's grace and provisions extend perfectly.
For the cherry tree spreads its branches,
To its Creator, giving thanks and praises.

I'd like to be like the tenacious cherry tree
                         Tenderly sharing strength and glee...
Magnifying its Creator through its blossoms,
Constantly, loyal and true... till the last wind blows.

There is one tree that is not Somei Yoshino.  It is Yamazakura (mountain sakura).  - 2012331

A long line of stalls, called "yatai", selling barbecues, grilled corn on the cob,
grilled squids, cotton candies, ice cream, etc.

A lively atmosphere: Many people and food stalls (back of the trees)
